Traveling to the UK: What Plug Adapter Do You Need? Besides an Adapter, Don’t Forget These 3 Essentials!

Heading to the UK? Make sure you're aware that the plugs and voltage there might not be compatible with your devices. To fully enjoy the British experience without any worries, you need to understand what type of outlets the UK uses, what the voltage is, and which devices you can't use there. Let’s take a look!

UK Outlet Types

The UK uses Type G outlets, also known as "three-pronged outlets," which connect three wires: "ground," "live," and "neutral." Although the UK is divided into several regions, the entire country uses the Type G outlet, making it very convenient.

Voltage in the UK

The voltage in the UK is 220V-230V with a frequency of 50Hz. This is the same as in Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and India, so if you're bringing devices from these regions, you won't need a voltage converter.

Devices like laptops, phones, and cameras often have built-in voltage converters, so you won't need an extra converter for them when traveling to the UK. However, if you're bringing devices from regions with a standard voltage of 120V (like Canada, the US, and Mexico) or 110V-130V (like Taiwan), you need to check if your devices are compatible with the UK voltage. If not, you'll need a voltage converter along with your plug adapter to avoid damaging your devices.

Are UK Outlets the Same as European Outlets?

UK outlets are different from those in most European countries, so travelers heading to other countries need to pay extra attention.

In addition to the UK, regions like Malta, Cyprus, and Ireland also use Type G three-pronged outlets. However, European outlets include Type C (two-round-pronged outlets) and Type E (three-round-pronged outlets).

Countries using Type C (two-round-pronged outlets) include Finland, Denmark, Greece, Norway, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Iceland, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Countries using Type E (three-round-pronged outlets) include Sweden, Belgium, and Monaco.

If you plan to visit multiple countries and discover they use different types of plugs, you'll need additional plug adapters to use your devices.

What Else to Bring? Must-Have Items for Traveling to the UK

Besides the plug adapters and voltage converters for your electronics, don't forget to bring the following three items:

  • Jacket:

The UK is located in northern Europe and is an island nation, so temperatures are often cooler. Even in summer, temperatures can drop significantly at night, so remember to pack a jacket.

  • Raincoat/Umbrella:

The UK has a humid and rainy climate, so rain gear is essential for convenient travel.

  • British Pound Cash:

While electronic payments are popular in the UK, some places, like small eateries, still only accept cash. It’s best to prepare some British pound cash in advance for emergencies.
