[Travel in Thailand] Essential luggage list & Thai socket knowledge!

Planning a trip to Thailand soon? In addition to the tropical atmosphere and delicious food, knowing Thailand’s socket types and voltage information is crucial to keeping your electronic devices running properly while traveling. This article will introduce in detail the commonly used socket types and voltage standards in Thailand, and provide some travel tips so that you can have no worries during your trip.

Thai Socket

Thailand socket types

In Thailand, the commonly used socket types are TYPE-A, TYPE-B, TYPE-C and TYPE-O:

TYPE-A:

Two-pin flat plug, common in the United States and Japan, suitable for small electronic devices.

TYPE-B:

Similar to the TYPE-A plug, but with an additional grounded round prong to provide more stable grounding protection.

TYPE-C:

Two-pin round plug, widely used in Europe and Asia, and one of the common plugs in Thailand.

TYPE-O:

This is a special plug type native to Thailand with three round prongs, but it is not common. Only found in some new buildings.

These four types of sockets can be found in Thailand, so if your plug does not match, it is recommended to bring an adapter.

Voltage in Thailand

The standard voltage in Thailand is 220V and the frequency is 50Hz. This is in line with the standards of most Asian and European countries. If your device supports 100V-240V (such as most mobile phones and laptops), you can use it directly.

However, travelers from 110V countries such as the United States and Canada need to bring a transformer to prevent voltage differences from damaging their equipment.

Can Hong Kong electrical appliances be used in Thailand?

The voltage in Hong Kong is 220V, which is the same as Thailand, so Hong Kong electrical appliances can be used directly in Thailand. Just bring an adapter to match the plug type.

Can Taiwanese electrical appliances be used in Thailand?

Taiwan's standard voltage is 110V, which is quite different from Thailand's 220V, so a transformer needs to be prepared to adjust the voltage. In addition, a TYPE-A, TYPE-B, TYPE-C or TYPE-O adapter is required to match the Thai socket.

Can Japanese electrical appliances be used in Thailand?

The voltage in Japan is 100V, while in Thailand it is 220V, which is a big difference. Therefore, when using Japanese appliances, you must bring a transformer to adjust the voltage and prepare adapters to adapt to different socket types.

Can American electrical appliances be used in Thailand?

The standard voltage in the United States is 120V, while in Thailand it is 220V, so you must bring a transformer when using American electrical appliances. In addition, the sockets in the United States are different from those in Thailand, and adapters need to be prepared to adapt to the socket type in Thailand.

Can Canadian electrical appliances be used in Thailand?

The voltage in Canada is 120V, which is quite different from Thailand's 220V. Therefore, when bringing Canadian electrical appliances to Thailand for use, you need to prepare a transformer to adjust the voltage. Canada uses TYPE-A and TYPE-B plugs, which match some sockets in Thailand, but it is still recommended to bring an adapter to ensure smooth use.
