[Travel in Canada] Tips on Canadian plug type & essential luggage list!
Planning a trip to Canada? Don’t forget to bring a charging plug when packing your luggage, but do you know what type of sockets are in Canada? Is there any difference in voltage? What electrical appliances cannot be brought to Canada for use? Let’s read this article together!

Canadian outlet types
There are two types of sockets used in Canada: TYPE-A and TYPE-B.

The TYPE-A socket is a two-pin flat socket, which can only use TYPE-A plugs, while the TYPE-B socket is a two-pin flat socket, plus a round grounding pin, and can use both TYPE-A and TYPE -B plug. In addition to Canada, these two types of sockets are also common in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and other regions.
If your electrical appliance uses other types of plugs, you will need to add an additional plug adapter before you can use it.
Canadian Voltage
Canada's standard voltage is 120V, and the power supply frequency is 60Hz. The voltage standard in the United States and Mexico is 120V, while in Taiwan it is 110-130V. The power supply network frequency in the above areas is also 60Hz, so if you bring electrical appliances from the above areas to Canada, there is no need to use an additional transformer.
However, since the voltage in Hong Kong is 220V and the power supply frequency is 50Hz, if the input voltage of the electrical appliance is marked as "110v-240v" or the electrical appliance comes with a transformer, such as mobile phones and laptops, it can automatically adapt to the Canadian voltage. However, If the electrical appliance has an input voltage of 220V, you need to buy an additional small transformer and plug it into the adapter.
Can Hong Kong electrical appliances be used in Canada?
The standard voltage in Hong Kong is 220V, while in Canada it is 120V. There is a big voltage difference between the two. If your appliance only supports 220V, then you will need to bring a transformer to accommodate Canadian voltage. In addition, the socket types are also different, so adapters need to be prepared.
Can Taiwanese electrical appliances be used in Canada?
Taiwan's standard voltage is 110V, which is relatively close to Canada's 120V. There is not much difference between the two. Taiwanese appliances can usually be used directly in Canada without a transformer. However, you still need to prepare an adapter according to the plug type.
Can Japanese electrical appliances be used in Canada?
The standard voltage in Japan is 100V, while in Canada it is 120V. Although the voltage difference is not significant, most Japanese appliances can still be used in Canada, but long-term use may affect the life of the appliance. Make sure your device can withstand 120V and prepare an adapter to plug into a TYPE-A or TYPE-B outlet.
Can American appliances be used in Canada?
The U.S. voltage and socket standards are exactly the same as Canada's, so U.S. appliances can be used directly in Canada without any transformers or adapters.
